Issue:

Never been a huge fan of Politics, but as I’m getting older and seeing how important it really is I want to start getting into it. I joined a forum about politics and government and I got so confused I deleted my account. First of all, I’m democratic so is my whole family but they are just democratic because of their history they don’t know MUCH about what all the democrats stand for..

What are some good online sources to check out and some books to check out to help me get more involved?

Thanks

Rather than act like a sheep and call yourself something, just think about many issues today and come up with what you think would be the best solution.

Son, how can you know you are a Democrat if you don’t know anything about them? I would read the manifesto of the Democrats and the GOP and see which one you agree with most before you make that decision. Also watch C-Span and attend speeches by politicians where possible. Get involved in local government, maybe once you are clued up to it you could even run as a candidate for state legislature or maybe United States congress.

I would start with good-old-fashioned Civics. Get familiarized with the process of all three branches of government. Get especially familiar with the Legislative Branch and the Executive Branch. Don’t concentrate so heavily on party loyalty. Republicans and democrats are not that different currently. You should spend a good amount of time reading up on political and economic theory. Many people do not even understand that Capitalism is an economic theory, not a political theory. You have to read up on topics like Socialism or you risk getting sucked into the propaganda machine. I would avoid FOX and MSNBC. Don’t spend time on partisan sites like Heritage.org or DailyKos.com. They both exist to sway your opinion….not to inform you. I admire your wanting to get into US politics. I wish more people would. After a lot of research and debate you will eventually find your footing.

Try: “People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn. It is one of the reasons I am a democrat.

  6. John Wright says:

In Australia we join our local Political Party Branch. Australian Labour Party (ALP), Liberal Party, Country Party, etc. We attend the branch meetings, join in the discussions/debates and actually vote on issues. If there is a Law we don’t like, or a piece of Legislation before the Parliament (State or Federal), we can in fact put forward amendments. We also become involved with campaigns by doing such activities as letterbox drops, door-knocks and fund-raising events.

It should be possible for you to do similar in the States.
