Is it weird to have my dining room at the front of the house?

Issue:

I love to entertain but the house I’m buying doesn’t have a dining room. Will it be too strange to just make the living room the dining room. Friends have said that I can’t have people just walk into the dining room but why not? Should I just give up the dining room idea altogether?
I forgot to add that I have a pretty large finished basement with a lot of natural light. I’m planning to put the family room there.

  1. the way i see it is its your freaking house who cares what people think if they walk into your house and dont like it that way who cares….. as long it looks good and dont look all funky to you then it shouldnt matter….. to tell you the truth as long as it dont look weird then a think it would be a good idea

  2. Is there no other room you can do it in? Because if the living room space is the dining room where will you put the couches and stuff for the more relaxed phase of the entertainment? hors d’Ĺ“uvre’s and pre-dinner wine and music are done separately. Not to mention if you want to play games or something after. This is also better done in a separate room than a more formal dining room.

  3. I know someone who had the exact same setup as it was a very small house with a finished basement. It worked out fine and didn’t look weird. What’s important is to decorate a house that suits your needs in a way YOU can live with. It’s a great setup for a small house if you like entertaining because half the people will congregate around the table while the other half will hang out downstairs in the family room. It won’t feel over-crowded.
